The Sweet Spot Dialing In motorcycle video provides information on motorcycle roadrace trackside tuning of suspension, jetting, tire tuning and gearing, and you'll ride around the roadrace track with Kurt with on-board video.
New Hampshire International Speedway is a very technical motorcycle roadrace track which gave us plenty of opportunity to explore and exploit each system we had set up in the shop. In this motorcycle video, we walk you through the process of creating the right motorcycle set-up package (straight-line stability, quick steering, great jetting, proper gearing, and of course ideal engine performance) for individual rider's needs and the changes and adjustments each rider should be making on his own motorcycle.
The first thing Jim Leonard and Kurt Hall needed to do at the roadrace track was to adjust the controls and suspension to Kurt's particular riding style and comfort. "It's important for the rider to understand the feedback their motorcycle is giving them. We purchase products that fit us, suit our desires, the same thing should happen with our motorcycle. We should make the adjustments we need to in order to get our motorcycle to fit us perfectly."
As Kurt does laps at the roadrace track, Jim explains the motorcycle suspension situations that arise and what his solutions are to adjusting to those circumstances. On-board video will show you components of the motorcycle suspension system as well as various other motorcycle components working under actual loads.
Lawrence Bolton of Dynojet takes you through a motorcycle dyno run, explaining how it is able to reproduce the load conditions of the roadrace track, and then analyzes the information that the dyno gives him. This information then enables you to make the proper adjustments on your motorcycle for peak performance.
Discussing motorcycle carburetion and jetting, Lawrence explains the transition from needle position to main jet, the symptoms of rich conditions, lean conditions, deceleration and pilot circuit on needle jet system and main jet system. He explains the effects of temperature, altitude, humidity and time on motorcycle carburetion.
Lawrence discusses fuel mixtures vs. pump gas with respect to its effect on motorcycle jetting and performance. Lawrence's advice to someone whose bike isn't running properly is "and make only one change at a time. Know where you've started and where you're going, keep detailed notes, otherwise you'll be lost, and finding your way back is very difficult."
"Choosing motorcycle tires is critical to performance, lap time and winning." Jeff Johnston of Metzeler Motorcycle Tires speaks about the proper motorcycle tire selection, and the role of a tire manufacturer at the roadrace track. He explains the information on a tire pressure board at the roadrace track, and why it is important of your motorcycle tires to be in a specific operating range. Many factors contribute to proper motorcycle tire selection and care and research should be done to make the right selection as it effects handling, suspension, chassis set-up and ultimately performance.
Dave Schlosser walks you through the details to be considered to adapt motorcycle gearing for a given road or racetrack. For instance, do you need maximum rpms at the end of a straightaway, or do you need greater drive out of specific corners? He explains the differences and what kind of motorcycle gearing you should choose in those circumstances.
Kurt, Jim and Jeff discuss some of the considerations of a roadrace effort, i.e. - how to budget money vs. rider's aspirations. It is important to consider motorcycle tire costs, spare parts, engine work vs. tires and seat time. "In most cases, it's not a question of horsepower, it's about handling, who can flick the motorcycle in, brake later and carry more corner speed. It's not about engine work, it's all about proper motorcycle set-up and confidence in the motorcycle."
